Review: The Song from Somewhere Else

Frank is trying to hold her world together despite Niel Noble making her life a misery. When he and his cronies corner her in the park and sling her bag into nettles, an unlikely rescuer complicates her life.

Nick is big, weird and despised by her entire school yet there's something about him that lifts Frank's spirits. Her stomach tells her to stay away, that being friends with Nick spells doom. But Frank ignores that niggling voice and discovers a world of wonderful, not only in the music she hears at his house.

The Song From Somewhere Else is Middle Grade Fiction at its finest. Frank and Nick melted my heart then pushed me to the limit of suspense. I needed to know what would happen to them and it wasn't looking good. At all. Until the very end.

The Song From Somewhere Else nails many core conflicts faced by every age. Can fitting in come at too high a price? Is it betrayal to reveal a secret when you are under serious physical threat? Is it possible to find forgiveness from others when you can't forgive yourself? Do other worlds exist? What about the laws of physics? Could there be portals into other worlds?

The Song From Somewhere Else is still echoing in my heart and Levi Pinfold's illustrations, which transform A.F. Harrold's story from a gripping story to a complete work of art, are irresistible. Even when I don't have time to reread the whole of The Song From Somewhere Else, I will be flicking through its images to reflect on the heart warming beauty of The Song From Somewhere Else.
