Announcement: New Reviewer Pat Simmons
Her accomplished, economic writing style has led to the imminent release of her first two picture books and today, we are thrilled to announce her arrival into the KBR family.
Pat joins our superlative reviewing team this month and can't wait to share her thoughts and feedback with us. Meantime, get to know Pat a little better with this special 12 Curly Questions Edition.
1.Tell us something hardly anyone knows about you.I have a pet rainbow stag beetle called Alexander.
2. What is your nickname?
The only person who has a nickname for me is my grandson Lewis who calls me Patty Arbaht. Long story but I’m thinking of using it as an author name.
3. What is your greatest fear?
That I’ll kick the bucket before I read all the books I want to read.
4. Describe your writing style in ten words.
I use as few words as possible to create stories.
5. Tell us five positive words that describe you as a writer.
Optimistic, Creative, Humorous, Keen learner
6. What book character would you be, and why?
Probably Alice. Wonderland would suit me fine.
7. If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?
I’d love to go back to 1901 and tell Beatrix Potter not to worry about the 6 publishers who rejected The Tale of Peter Rabbit. It was all going to work out fine.
8. What would your ten-year-old self say to you now?
I’m so happy that you still love children’s books old girl.
9. Who is your greatest influence?
No one person really. I’m influenced by all the wonderful positive people I meet. As a writer, Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, J.K. Rowling, John le Carre, Neil Gaiman, Enid Blyton…oh, so many writers.
10. What/who made you start writing?
I always loved writing stories as a child. Probably because I was a) lousy at anything physical and b) keen to win the Cadbury’s writing contest that primary schools in the UK used to run annually in the 1950s. You can guess what the prizes were. Came first twice.
11. What is your favourite word and why?
Serendipity. I love the way it sounds and I love happy accidents.
12. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Pat lives at Scarborough on the beautiful NSW south coast with her menagerie of cats, dogs and assorted mini beasts.
Pat is a writer of poems, short stories, flash fiction and children’s picture books. Her work has been published in anthologies and children’s magazines (including NSW School Magazine, Alphabet Soup & Looking Glass Magazine) and she has won writing competitions in Australia and the UK. Pat has independently published a collection of flash fiction stories for adults called 52 Twisted Tales.
Pat is delighted to have two picture books due for release in 2018. Ziggy’s Zoo published by Little Pink Dog Books and Little Spiralpublished by Little Steps Publishing.
