Review: The World's Worst Pirate

Michelle Worthington has written an action-packed, amusing and memorable pirate story.

The World's Worst Pirate contains all the expected dangers for a pirate ship sailing the seven seas but it includes an unique twist.

Will, our unlikely hero, has a problem, he hates being a pirate especially as he gets sea sick.

Will's mother, who is the Captain of the aptly name ship the Jolly Fishcake, dreams of Will becoming a pirate captain. He dreams of being a chef in his own restaurant.

Will's mother does recognise that he is very talented in the galley. He loves cooking cupcakes and who could possibly resist '...vanilla cupcakes with chocolate icing and sprinkles...'? I know I can't.

One day while cooking his new batch of delicious cupcakes the ship pitches and rolls, it is under attack. Will formulates an ingenious solution how to save the pirate ship from the ginormous Kraken.

The World's Worst Pirate is illustrated by Katrin Dreiling, her blue and green waves attracted my eye to pick this book off the shelf.

Katrin's illustrations have an attention to detail that makes this book engaging. I love that when Will is introduced he has a rolling pin holstered in his belt instead of a cutlass, giving readers a clue to what he would rather be doing. Keep an eye out for the cat and bird's smaller story in the illustrations.

This has been a big year for Michelle with her books The Three Legged Kangaroo from Uluru and Glitch being released earlier in the year. While KBR met Katrin at the start of the year in our interview for our Meet the Illustrator post, see here for Katrin's interview.
