Review: The Red Dread
Shrew and his forest friends are feeling kind of nervous. The Red Dread is thumping through the trees and no one knows who will be snatched up next.
Thump, thump, thump, thump goes The Red Dread.
Rabbit disappears.
Then Chicken disappears.
Who will be next?
This is a funny and silly picture book about learning not to jump to conclusions.
With a short word count and written entirely in dialogue, it’s fast moving and action-packed.
With a short word count and written entirely in dialogue, it’s fast moving and action-packed.
The thump thumping throughout the book provides lots of opportunity for the kids to join in, and the vivid illustrations create great dramatic tension with shadowy blues, purples and blacks throughout the story.
In the end, Shrew discovers the extent of his blunder, and little listeners will get a giant laugh. While the joke is made clear, it’s not explicitly spelled out, allowing children to figure out the joke for themselves.
The Red Dread is funny, silly and engaging — the perfect picture book for humour-addicts aged three to six.
