Review: Alfred's War

Just like so many other young Australian men, Alfred enlists to serve in World War I for adventure and travel.

A young indigenous man, with no citizenship rights in his own country, Alfred finds comradeship and equality in the army.

He returns to Australia injured and finds a country still unable to embrace civil rights, or even honour his sacrifice.

Each year, Alfred quietly attends an ANZAC ceremony to remember his fallen mates. But Alfred is one of the forgotten soldiers, a man who fought bravely for his country and is plagued by the haunting memories of war, yet is still not classed as a citizen.

This confronting and beautiful story reveals the hostility indigenous people faced on a daily basis and the horrifying truth behind their crucial role in Australia's war efforts.

Captured with poignancy through illustrations in a soft wash of colours, this is a story to share with children, to help ensure such men are never forgotten again.
