Review: The Last Peach

I open every Gus Gordon picture book with excited anticipation, and they never ever disappoint.

The Last Peach is no exception, and I will even go so far to say I believe this is Gordon’s best picture book yet.

Written entirely in dialogue, The Last Peach pulls the reader into the insect world where two bugs have discovered the last peach of the season but can’t decide if they should honour it for its beauty or gobble it up because it looks delicious.

The Last Peach is different and quirky. It’s engaging and entertaining. It is HILARIOUS.

With a laugh-out-loud ending you won’t see coming, it’s a book you immediately want to start reading again after you reach the end.

And I love that the joke is not made obvious. It allows you to ask your little listeners questions to see if they can work it out for themselves.

Of course, you can’t talk about a Gus Gordon picture book without also discussing his divine illustrations.

I adore Gordon’s illustration style. His pictures are funky and fun and super appealing to kids, but they are also wonderfully unique in a way that makes each one like a piece of artwork worthy of a frame.

If you’ve read a Gus Gordon before, you know exactly what I mean. His passion for infusing unique textures, mixed media and collage into his illustrations elevates every page. His books are something different, something special and always a delight to explore.

So make sure you check out The Last Peach by Gus Gordon. It will make you smile, giggle and laugh out loud. Oh, and the kids will adore it too!

And if, like me, you can't get enough of Gus Gordon, check out Somewhere Else, Herman and Rosie and The Catawampus Cat (for more amazing Gordon illustrations).
