Review: The Naming Of Tishkin Silk

There are stories that unsuspectingly weave themselves into the very fabric of your being. The Naming Of Tishkin Silk is one of these rare treasures. A story to be read and re-read. It is for this reason that I have been hesitant to offer my thoughts.

What if I fail to tell you how very special this book is? How beautifully Glenda Millard has created a whole world. A world that not only includes the story of the main character but gives you a sense of every other character in the story with such clarity you feel as if you have known them your whole life?

There are many things unspoken in families and the Silks are no exception. It is soon apparent that every member in the Silk family is struggling in their own way. Unable and unsure how to talk about what really matters as they continue with the daily routine under the guidance of their Grandmother Nell and Father Ben. It is a story of secrets and sorrow. Guilt, friendship, and family. But most of all The Naming of Tishkin Silk is a story of family, the roles we play, the hearts we hold and how important it is to talk to each other.

Glenda Millard beautifully captures the Australian landscape surrounding the Silk family as Griffin's story unfolds and with it his secret. He is second last in a line of girls, the only son in the Silk family. The 'hippy' family that live at the end of Silk road. He has a wonderful family but they are engulfed in sadness. Griffin's Mum has gone away and with her, his baby sister.  With them both gone he has isolated himself, afraid to share what he is feeling. We meet him as he is starting school in stiff new clothes. He is jeered at during the day and is welcomed only by one other student. Leila, a courageous princess, crowned with daisies, who has a heart that listens. Whose friendship helps Griffin give his family what they need most.

I have read this book so many times and I am looking forward to this coming holiday to read it with my children who are now old enough to appreciate each character, their hope, their sadness, and the wisdom Glenda Millard has imparted. I know it will give them a deeper sense of empathy and compassion. The only advice I have when you read the first in this sincere 'Kingdom Of Silk' series is to listen with your heart.
