Review: Who's the Biggest?

Another fabulous book from Delphine Chedru, Who’s the Biggest? is all about size and learning the concept of what’s the bigger ‘something’ in relation to something else.

Like Chedru’s other recent picture book, How Many Kisses?, Who’s the Biggest? delivers an interactive learning experience for kids, filled with quirky and overflowing with fun.

At the beginning of Who’s the Biggest?, Chedru explains how to read the book. On every page you need to ask the characters, ‘who’s the biggest?’ and then read out the text to discover the answer.

‘I am!’ trumpets the elephant to the butterfly.

‘I am!’ hums the pan to the grain of rice.

I’ve never read a book that asks the reader to be part of the story without having text there for the reader to actually read. I found it a wonderfully engaging experience, and a wonderful way to get children involved in the storytelling by prompting them to ask the characters ‘the question’. 

I also loved the varied big and small pairs. The objects/animals/characters are often engaged in an activity or the illustrations shows a scene — a simple scene but a scene with more than one object. 

This creates a wonderful challenge for the kids, as they really have to look at the pictures closely to figure out which objects are being compared and then which is bigger than the other.

If you’re looking for an engaging picture book that teaches about size while it entertains, Who’s the Biggest? is a great choice. Filled with bright colours, funky illustrations and large, bold text, it’s a fantastic picture book for little learners aged four to eight.
