The Facts:The Removal Of Fr. Paul

There has been some concern that the jungle has been associating the actions of Archbishop Apuron as the actions of the NCW.  According to an anonymous poster:
AnonymousApril 11, 2018 at 12:57 PM
This is no coincidence. They connect unrelated things with the Way. This is wrong! Archbishop Apuron and Fr. Adrian walked in the Way. But this is unrelated and what they say about the Way is 100% untrue! The charges are made up in all these unrelated matters! No wonder Tim Rohr wants to connect unrelated things. This is his agenda. Absolute lies and shameless innuendo.

This entire controversy started with the removal of Father Paul on July 16, 2013. The jungle has been claiming that the NCW was the one who removed Father Paul as pastor of Santa Barbara Catholic Church in Dededo.  In fact, Tim Rohr’s book Target makes that false claim.

This is our side of the story and the facts. I also placed in bold some pertinent facts that should not be ignored.

After receiving complaints from some of the Dededo parishioners in 2011, the Archbishop Apuron ordered Father Paul to remove Joseph Lastimosa who was a registered sex offender.  Lastimoza served time in jail for raping and killing an adult female.  Father Paul terminated Lastimoza from employment, but kept him as a voluntary worker. An investigation was later conducted, which revealed:

  • that Lastimoza was still working in the Dededo parish and even had keys to the parish.
  • that Lastimoza was allowed to purchase supplies for the Church.
  • that Lastimoza stayed at the same hotel at which a Confirmation retreat was held.
Therefore, Father Paul was removed on July 16, 2013 and Father Dan Bien was immediately appointed Parochial Administrator on July 17, 2013.  Below is the official Aviso, which was printed in the Umatuna.

Suddenly for no reason, the jungle started blaming the NCW for removing Father Paul.  It started with Patti Arroyo in the K57 talk show.  She suggested that it was the Way who was responsible for removing Father Paul and Tim Rohr jumped on the bandwagon.  Patti Arroyo made this assertion without any basis on facts or evidence. According to Tim Rohr dated July 27, 2014 (the bold is mine):
On her K57 radio show (Tuesday, July 23), host, Patti Arroyo, suggested a possible ulterior motive for the firing of Fr. Gofigan from his Dededo parish post and his otherwise rather clearly implied direction to go find another diocese.
In her interview with Fr. Gofigan - and independent of any comment made by him - Arroyo suggested that the action taken against Fr. Paul was not about the status of the registered sex-offender but about the desire of the Archbishop to implement the Neo-Catechumenal Way into Guam's largest parish, a move Gofigan is said to have resisted..........

Rohr stated in his blog that he did not agree or disagree with Patti Arroyo's assertion. However, all the facts pointed out that he agreed with Arroyo's assertion.  As a matter of fact, Rohr wrote a book entitled Target equals Priest: The Neocatechumenal Way and the mission to destroy Fr. Paul Gofigan.  In both his book and blog, Rohr claimed that the NCW was the one who removed Father Paul so they could insert the NCW into the Dededo parish.  According to Rohr:
As for Apuron putting in the NCW after Cottman pounded her fist on the table, he certainly could have. But Apuron doesn't call the shots in the Archdiocese. Gennarini and Pius do. And they are much smarter than Apuron. They know they have to sneak in the NCW lest we detect their evil intent. This is why they waited for something they could take Fr. Paul down with - or so they thought.
Let the facts clearly show that Father Paul was removed on July 16th, and the very next day, Father Dan was appointed Parochial Administrator by Archbishop Apuron.  If the NCW wanted to insert itself into the Dededo parish, an RMS priest or a supporter of the Way would have been immediately appointed after Father Paul was removed.

Rohr credits his blog for stopping the Way from inserting itself into the Dededo parish.  However, facts show that from the time Father Paul was removed and Father Dan was appointed, Rohr did not have the time to convince anyone of anything within that 1 day period. The date of Father Paul's removal and the date of Father Dan's appointment cannot be disputed.  It was obvious that Archbishop Apuron did not hesitate in making the appointment.  And the appointment he made to Santa Barbara Catholic Church in Dededo was a priest who was NOT walking in the Way. The appointment was made immediately without any hesitation by Archbishop Apuron and without any influence from the NCW.

If the NCW really wanted the Way in the Dededo parish, a supporter of the Way or an RMS priest would have been immediately appointed.  But no such thing took place.  These are the facts.  Rohr's book is a propaganda.  One then should wonder why all the propaganda.  Where there is a propaganda, there is a hidden agenda.

The reason Father Paul was removed was because he disobeyed a 2011 directive, ordering him to remove a sex offender from working in the parish.  It never had anything to do with the Way.
