Review: Wait!

Just wait! I know I say it numerous times a day to my kids and now Beck and Matt Stanton are going to flip it around and make us grown-ups do the waiting.

We sit down, get comfy and prepare to read this book. But… the book’s not quite ready yet. Maybe after a stretch, a scratch and a wriggle. How about now? No? OK, I guess we’ll all just have to wait and watch the clock... Are you getting hungry? Would you rather go and play? Well, too bad. We all have to wait.

Doesn’t this book understand that I’m a busy grown-up? I need to do the dishes and pay some bills and make some phone calls. But it looks like this book is just going to force me to WAIT.

This is a hilarious read aloud book guaranteed to have the kids giggling and wriggling (and you cringing at how all too familiar it sounds…). It cleverly captures all the delay tactics kids use on us every day, as well as all the tactics we use right back at them!

Even though this is a really funny book. it also makes you reflect on how uncomfortable we have all become with waiting. We need to be doing something all the time – checking our email, making a phone call, cleaning up. We really aren’t very good at sitting quietly, despite our constant insistence that children do it!

The book is visually appealing with bright block colour pages and large print telling us why we have to keep waiting. It uses clever text positioning and font variations, as well as simple, bold and fun illustrations to focus attention and illicit giggles!

I read this book with my three and eight year olds. The eight year old was in hysterics and wanted to read it again but the three year old didn't quite get it yet. So I would be aiming for an age range of 4 - 8 (though some older kids would also love it).

This is a book the kids will love (and the grown-ups will also secretly love, despite the frustration!). An original, fun idea that will resonate with kids and grown-ups alike.

Look out for our 12 Curly Questions with Beck Stanton coming in a couple of days!
