spring 2018 parent workshops

well, Babies & Brew continued to be wildly popular from March thru June! here is what we did!

March- Focus on SENSES

Station 1: I SPY Bags

i made these using rice, quart size ziplocks & various trinkets lying around my office! i took photos of all the trickets and the kids searched thru the rice to find them. this was kind of work intensive for the lukewarm reaction i got from kids & parents. i saved them to use again someday but this activity was not a favorite for me. live & learn i guess!

Station 2 - Texture Capsules

bought these capsules from Lakeshore Learning. they were interesting, kids seemed to like them. i also bought sound capsules that i didn't use yet.

April- FOCUS on COLORS

Station 1 - Pom Pom Color Sort Game

the kids really loved the pom poms and matching them to the bunny with the same color ears!

Station 2 - Cheerio Butterflies & Necklaces

we used fruity, colorful cereal for two craft options: string on a lanyard to make a necklace OR fill in a baggie , then tie in the middle to make a butterfly! the lanyard worked better than something flimsy like a ribbon. fun!

Additional purchase: this Caterpillar Color Sorting toy from Lakeshore Learning was fun & eye catching!

May- WATER/OCEAN/FISH

Station 1 - Alphabet Bubble Game

Purchased from Lakeshore. i put these plastic bubbles in a bin of water so they could float kind of like a carnival duck pond! one side has a letter, the other side features a picture of something that starts with that letter. these were awesome, the kids LOVED the water!!! one of my favorite stations but dont forget a towel for the table bc its wet!

Station 2 - Plastic Bag Aquariums

we filled a plastic bag with hair gel, then added candy fish. sounds good, right? candy and counting; what could possibly go wrong?

full disclosure: this was my absolute LEAST FAVORITE station EVER. the red candy mixed with the sticky hair product looked disgusting by the end of the program, just a like a big gross mess in a bag. but i mostly hate it bc when i was prepping the day before, i couldn't resist eating one of these stupid candies and it pulled out some of my dental work. now i need either a root canal or possibly an implant which is not covered by my insurance.  i wish i never found this idea, take my advice on this one & stay away from the fish candy.

new purchase: inflatable water turtle toy - so cute!!

June-  More Fun with COLORS

Station 1 Finger Painting in Ziplock Bags

everyone loved this station! and even tho it was messier than i expected, i loved it too. theoretically if you squeeze the paint right into the bag onto the paper, it would stay in the bag. but you know the kids will want to squeeze the tubes themselves and it will end up all over the table & their hands. some of the parents wanted the kids to use their hands with no plastic bag. some didn't want their kids to do it even with a plastic bag! this station was so popular, i ran out of plastic bags. honestly, the paint is washable so it washes away quickly & easily so a little mess was no biggie, just don't wear your one of your nice new outfits.

Station 2 Color Match Game

Another printable game from childcareland.com where they match the color circles to the right ice cream cone. i put some cute Eric Carle tattoos in the basket as a reward!

New addition: a colorful tunnel to crawl thru!

Many of my caregivers were really disappointed that Babies & Brew would be taking a break for the summer so i am planning to host another one in late August as long as my funding comes thru in time. the June session was attended by over 30 families so i am really happy with this non structured format; the playtime/refreshments/socialization just works here. i love the special station activities because we are showing parents how to use everyday materials they have around the house to create fun, educational experiences for their kids. Looking forward to more Babies & Brew next year!
