Review: Backyard
How long is it since you explored your backyard?Have you looked at it only during the day, or have you gone exploring at night as well?
Backyard does just that. It shines a light on the flora, fauna and activity that you may miss if you don't look closely.
If you live in an apartment, or the centre of the city, you probably don't have the opportunity to see this either.
Discover a spider weaving a web, and skinks slithering amongst the foliage.
Find a trio of Tawny Frogmouths watching the world from their perch in a tree, and frogs enjoying a nocturnal bath.
And then there are the evening eaters: bats snacking on a fig tree, and possums scavenging.
Painted illustrations by Lizzy Newcomb, and relatively sparse, expressive text by Ananda Braxton-Smith, depict some of what you might find in an Australian backyard (all depending where you live, and what time of day or year it is, of course).
Get to back to nature and uncover what's really going on at night time. If you have a backyard, plan an outdoor expedition and see what you can find.
Wheverever you live, you can experience the wonderful world of some of Australia's wild creatures, and their life in our suburbs, by reading Backyard.
