Review: Fixer the Robot
Fixer is a kind, hardworking and humble robot. Everyday he ‘trundles up the hill’ and helps other robots as they go about their work. His acts of kindness don’t go unnoticed, as we discover when an unfortunate event results in Fixer needing some help. The story does a great job of building Fixer’s loveable character during his encounters with Dug the digger, Bull the dozer and Gertie the grabber when he does anything he can to help, including giving up his own battery.
Written and illustrated by John Kelly, Fixer the Robot is a fun and emotional story of friendship with a lovely message about kindness and reciprocation. Set in outer space, the illustrations are vibrant, filled with bright colours, and lights, all wonderfully contrasting the shadowy dark spaces.
This story is sure to be loved by children, especially those who are fans of robots, diggers and outer space encounters. Flowing and rhyming text which builds to loud smashes and crashes makes it fun to vocalise. Spot varnish on the front cover of the book gives it a nice tactile element.
