Review: Maxi the Lifeguard In Deep Water

Trent Maxwell (of Bondi Rescue fame) and comedy writer David Lawrence have come together to deliver this brilliant new junior fiction series about beach life in Sydney.

In this first instalment in the series, follow Trent “Maxi” Maxwell as he decides to join the Buckler Ocean Swimming Club and compete in the Junior Ocean Challenge. 

He’s got a lot to learn, and not much time to learn it, but the prize is HUGE — desperately needed funds for his new swimming club and a day with the lifeguard he idolises. 

But his lack of ocean skills isn’t the only thing that stands in Maxi’s way. There’s also the school bully, Josh, who is determined to win the competition himself. 

He’s waiting around every corner, seeking out opportunities to sabotage Maxi and make him look like a fool.

Luckily for Maxi, he has a team of sidekicks, including his two best friends, Rachel and Felix, and his Grandpa Bill. With the help of friends and family, Maxi gets competition ready. But on competition day, Maxi will have to make hard decisions if he really wants to win the prize.

Kids are going to love this new series. It’s fun, fast-paced, super-relatable and an easy read. Scattered with funky black and white illustrations by Peter Baldwin, there are heaps of picture prompts to help kids who are moving to longer books. The text is large and the chapters are short.

For fans of fast-moving junior fiction, surfing and the beach, Maxi the Lifeguard In Deep Water is the start of something very cool for junior readers.
