Review: Wren
As someone who grew up craving a little quiet in a busy, bustling family of five kids, this is a book that sang to my soul.
Wren is a sweet and sensitive boy who just wants some peace and quiet. But it's hard to find when you're surrounded by the bedlam of a large family.
Then, Wren's baby sister arrives — and she is the noisiest of them all. Poor Wren decides to run away for some serenity with his grandparents, who live in the country.
Before long, however, Wren starts to miss his family — noise and all.
Katrina Lehman and Sophie Beer clearly know what it's like to grow up in a big family. Rich, rollicking language and vibrant, detailed illustrations capture the clutter and craziness with such warmth and joy.

Beautifully structured, the story has an irresistible rhythm that's a treat to read out loud, while the illustrations have a humour and intricacy that will keep children entertained for hours. And the twist at the end is sweet, simple and incredibly satisfying.
This is such a lovely story for sensitive children in need of some peace in their busy lives. But it is more than a tale of introversion. It's about trying to find your place in a big family, especially when you feel so different to everyone else. It's about the need for some space to be yourself — and the need for a kindred spirit amid the chaos.
A stunning debut for both author and illustrator, Wren is a wonderful new addition to any family.
