Review: Macca's Christmas Crackers

Macca the Alpaca is back and this time for a fun Christmas story. Macca’s Christmas Crackers follows Macca the Alpaca and Alpacas with Maracas and includes as much energy and fun as ever. This Christmas story by Matt Cosgrove is about friendship and the spirit of giving. It features hilarious characters, rhymes and bright, joy-filled illustrations.

Christmas is here and it’s Macca’s favourite time of the year! Along with all the decorating, fun and festivities, Macca really looks forward to giving gifts to his friends. Unfortunately, Macca’s piggy bank is completely empty - he’s done a pretty terrible job of saving this year. So with the help of his pal Al, they get creative and decide to make their own gifts in the form of Christmas crackers, without spending a single cent.

I love many of the finer details in this book, such as the endpapers which feature an alpaca Christmas wrapping paper pattern, the subtle spot varnish on the cover, and the little mouse characters who appear on many of the pages. Also notable is the fact that Macca is a ridiculously cute alpaca putting him in trend with the currently growing public appeal for alpacas and llamas, that are often farmed or kept as pets here in Australia.

Cute comical characters with big round eyes and brightly coloured illustrations give this story an abundance of life and suit the playful rhyming text with perfection. This, along with the Christmas theme, makes the story a joy to read aloud. It’s sure to become a favourite for children and families, especially during the festive season.
