Review: The Perfect Nest

This humorous and colourful picture book had hold of me before I even opened the covers. 

Jack the cat is pictured on the back cover building his perfect nest. On the front, his mischievous face is peeking out from his hiding place behind the completed nest.

But who is the nest for?

Here comes the chicken. iCaramba! she exclaims and lays her egg.  Sacre blue! cries the duck when she sees the perfect nest. She pushes the chicken out and lays her egg beside the chicken’s small one. Then in comes a goose and pushes the two out to make room for her!

All Jack can see are three eggs and the image of a large omelette. But he is unprepared for the mayhem that follows as each bird fights for ownership of the perfect nest. The fight continues for days as they all sit in the nest squabbling over who will stay and who will go.

Crafty Jack finds the ideal solution to the problem but gets more than he bargained for in the process.

This entertaining story will put smiles on reader’s faces from the first page. John Manders has created cheeky but lovable farmyard characters full of expression and activity in a story about conflict resolution.

Strong bold colours fill the pages. Children will delight in following Jack’s antics and seeing the elaborate furnishings he’s used to build his perfect nest. Most of all, they’ll love the solution to a plan that started out with one purpose in mind, but ended with a surprise.
