Review: Tropical Terry
Welcome to Coral Reef City, home to the flashiest, prettiest tropical fish in the entire ocean and to Terry, the blue fish.
Terry is a blue fish, who along with Cilla, the sea crab and Steve, the sea snail spend their days playing games of dodge a dolphin, hide a fish and shark speed.
But when he asks the tropical fish if they would like to play with them, they inform Terry that their games are stupid and he is dull and boring.
Cilla and Steve both try to convince Terry to forget about their mean comments, but he wants to be popular and feels he needs to change who he is to fit in with them.
With the help of his friends, he collects bits and pieces littered across the ocean floor, and together with lots of sticky seaweed he transforms into a shimmery and shiny tropical fish.
Terry flaunts his new looks and is soon the most popular fish in Coral Reef City, he even changes his name to Tropical Terry. He loves playing with his new friends and gets caught up in the excitement of being popular that he forgets Cilla and Steve.
Frolicking in the ocean, Terry runs into Eddie the Eel who is looking for his dinner and guess who catches his eye – Tropical Terry. In a race against being eaten, Tropical Terry must decide who he really is and which friends he can trust.
Author and illustrator, Jarvis has created a story that will resonate with audiences. Regardless of what age people are, everyone likes to be popular and our self esteem and ability to accept who we are often dependent on this. These are the challenges that Jarvis has set for Terry.
In creating Coral Reef City, the illustrations are intricate feasts of colour and immerse the reader in this world. In a previous life, Jarvis trained as a graphic artist and also designed record cover sleeves, websites and was an animation director.
