Review: Monster Party
When celebrated children's authors Alison Lester and Jane Godwin visited Rawa Community School, in one of the most remote communities in Western Australia, they unleashed a powerful creative force.
With that creativity came a vibrant and cheeky group of desert monsters who dance and stomp and galumph (best word ever) through the pages of this delightful new picture book from Magabala Books.
The monsters come out of the ground for a party at Dora Lake and then create havoc for the school children who live on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert.
The monsters come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have been joyfully rendered in cut-out illustrations by the students.
Younger children especially will connect with the delightful, childish faces of the monsters and the delicious use of language in rhyming couplets.
There is nothing scary about these monsters. In fact, they are an expression of pure joy and fun - those inherent and inclusive qualities of childhood.
This is a glorious book for every home and classroom, perfect for igniting discussions about indigenous communities and inspiring collaborative storytelling projects.
