Review: Penguins Can’t Fly!

Penguins Can’t Fly! is a sweet story about Hudson the penguin and Gregory the seagull, two birds who grow up together. As time goes by Hudson faces a challenge in discovering that he doesn’t have the same abilities as Gregory. A lovely book with a focus on friendship and being different.

Best friends Hudson and Gregory do everything together, they have ever since they hatched from their eggs right next to each other. When Gregory’s natural flying abilities kick in, Hudson feels sad and left out. Despite Hudson's amusing attempts at flying, he just can’t do it, this is because he is a penguin, not a seagull. Soon enough, they discover that Hudson has unique abilities of this own which he puts to use impressively, making the bond between him and Gregory stronger than ever.

A lovely and playful look at friendship and the positive differences we have as individuals. There is a touch of mean behaviour, which could be viewed as bullying by the other seagulls towards Hudson but it’s kept lighthearted and equality quickly prevails.

The illustrations suit this book perfectly, they bring great life to the story and could be used as a basis for many discussions. I love that the birds have such great character and expression and that the colours are well balanced throughout.
