Review: Cherries

If you're already bemoaning the end of summer, this glorious ode to those lazy, hazy days is for you.

Two children fill the long, balmy days with typical Australian summertime activities while they wait for the first cherries of the season to ripen.

They make daisy chains, fly a kite, slurp iceblocks, barbecue by the river and gaze at the stars. All the while, their anticipation builds through the simple repetition of the phrase, 'it's not time yet'.

Carrie Gallasch and Sara Acton, who teamed up in the charming Stitches and Stuffing, are clearly a perfect match.

Carrie's poetic language evokes a family summer in the country that is idyllic and dreamy. It's beautifully captured by Sara Acton's soft loose lines and wistful watercolours.

Young readers will delight in the everyday moments, from mosquito bites and sausages dribbling with sauce, to those quiet moments with family and the first bite of a juicy, sweet cherry.
