Review: The Odd Egg
Unlike the other birds who laid an egg, Duck found his. He thinks that his huge egg with green spots is beautiful. The other birds think that it is an odd egg. Once all the other eggs have hatched Duck still has to wait for his new arrival. Ah, what a beautiful family they make.
The Odd Egg, is a wonderful story to share with families that are waiting to welcome a new arrival into their home. It shows the love between a parent and child, even if they are not biologically related.
Gravett's soft coloured illustrations are delightful. Her inspired use of split pages, like Eric Carl's The Very Hungry Caterpillar, creates a feeling of anticipation as each baby hatches. Then there is a pause, a gorgeous double page spread showing Duck waiting for his egg to hatch while knitting booties in the shape of webbed feet. A final split page hides the surprise of what animal baby duck is, the ending is funny and very pleasing.
