The MoMo Challenge...Parents Beware

There's an internet challenge going around called the "MoMo Challenge."

Momo targets children by asking them to text a number on What'sApp.  This then sends the child instructions to complete dangerous tasks.  As they complete the tasks, they send a picture for proof through the What'sApp program.  They are warned if they do not complete a task, they may be cursed by the MoMo.

As you move through the challenges, they become more and more dangerous.  The final challenge ends with Momo telling the participant to take their own life and record it for social media.

There has also been reports of editing kid-friendly YouTube videos to include images of Momo along with instructions that encourage kids to do acts of self-harm.

This is a reminder that while the internet is helpful for kids in so many ways, it also has a dark side that is perpetuated by deviant individuals.

It's also a wake up call for parents.  Parents must protect their children from dangerous things that lurk on the web.

Pew research found that 61% of parents check the websites their children visit.  For smartphones, the percentage dropped to 48%.

And as ministry leaders, we should come alongside parents and partner with them in this endeavor.
The Momo Challenge is an example of why children's ministry leaders must be aware of what is going on in the culture and help equip parents to navigate through it with their children.

With the technological advances of the smartphone and tablet comes the attached dangers. Kids can access the web at any time and place.  Which means danger is just one click away most of the time.

Police have issued warnings to parents on social media to steer clear of the MoMo challenge.  They have uncovered violent content, sexual innuendos and clips spliced into kids videos that include a man giving tips on suicide.

There are safety measures and apps that parents can use to block harmful content.
