What's Hap-pinning Wednesday: Our Beach Trip

Hi, y'all! Sorry it's taken me a minute to recap our beach vacation. But, better late than never, right?

We went to Fort Walton Beach, Florida on Okaloosa Island for a few days as part of Brandon's extended family reunion. (There were 50+ family members there!) They do this every few years or so, and this year decided to do it in Fort Walton Beach and we all stayed in the Azure Condominum. I'll be honest and say that it wasn't my favorite beach town (although the beach was beautiful) nor my favorite place I've ever stayed (although the beachfront view from our condo was great; I just think our condo could have used some updating and some paint touch-ups). I much prefer the Sandestin/30A area, but that's just my two cents. We still had a great time with family!

\\ SATURDAY
We flew from DFW-Pensacola last Saturday, July 6. Brandon's office was closed for July 4-5, so it was nice to have an extra long weekend before our trip. We flew around lunchtime, so we went to the Admirals Club and let the boys get filled up with food before we left. They did great on the plane! We rented a car and car seats in Pensacola and the boys fell asleep for almost all of our 1.5-hour drive. I ordered groceries from Publix (the best grocery store!) ahead of time via Instacart and we picked them up on our way to the beach.

Once we got settled in our condo, we walked across the street to AJ's Oyster Shanty for dinner. The food was actually really good (we ordered a platter of oysters, fried mozzarella and crab cake balls for us to share and the boys both got fried shrimp and fish) and the drinks were delicious. It hit the spot; we were starving!

After dinner, the boys begged to go to the beach, so we just let them in their clothes. Which turned into them stripping down into their underwear. Oh well!

\\ SUNDAY:
Our first beach day! We couldn't have asked for prettier weather! We stayed on the beach from morning until lunchtime playing in the ocean and visiting with family. We came back in our room and had lunch and let the boys nap while we had a glass of wine on the patio. We then went back to the beach and pool post-nap, which the boys loved. (They were worn out!)

For dinner, we drove 10-ish minutes to Destin to Louisiana Lagniappe -- and it was absolutely delicious! We started with the lobster rangoons, and Brandon had the special (grouper baked in paper, a salad and a twice-baked potato) and I had the blackened red fish with lobster/crab topping, a salad and a twice-baked potato). The boys shared a grilled cheese, as they filled up on the appetizer and the delicious homemade hushpuppies the waiter kept bringing.

We sat outside on the balcony and the view (and sunset) were spectacular!

After dinner, we took the boys to Sugar Land for an ice cream treat before heading back to the condo to go crab hunting with the family.

\\ MONDAY:
Beach day two! It was another beautiful day (and thankfully much cooler with a breeze). We enjoyed another day playing in the ocean, visiting with family and hopping in the pool.

That night, a huge storm rolled in right before we were scheduled to take family pictures. We attempted a few in my in-laws' condo before we spied the rain stopping and a beautiful rainbow, so we all hightailed it down to the beach to capture that gorgeousness as our backdrop!

These are just iPhone snaps; I can't wait to get the actual images back!

We had dinner in my in-laws' condo post-pictures, and then the extended family all gathered there and we stayed out far too late for our liking, but had a ball visiting with family.

\\ TUESDAY:
We headed home! Brandon had to get back to work and we had already taken our ski trip earlier this year, and he simply just doesn't have a ton of days to take off. So, we said our goodbyes to everyone, stopped by Capriccio Cafe for a crepe on our way out, and headed to the airport.

We flew home out of Destin/Fort Walton Beach Airport and again, the boys did great on the flight. We were pleasantly surprised both times with them, our flights (on-time both ways!) and how generous the flight attendants were in bringing them snacks...and more snacks!...and us adult beverages. ;)

We got home just in time for our favorite ice cream truck to roll through our neighborhood, and the boys enjoyed that special treat before we all went to bed super early. We were BEAT!

That's a wrap on our beach vacation! We are looking forward to next year's beach trip -- whenever and wherever that will be! :)
