Review: Lunch At 10 Pomegranate Street

A delicious collection of recipes, beautifully illustrated and collated in a way which honours ingredients, sharing and love of food.

In the different apartments at 10 Pomegranate Street, 15 dishes are in the making. From Mister Ping’s Little Trees to Matilda’s Strawberry Crumble, each recipe shows a little of the heart, soul and culture of the occupants. Each page spread features a new recipe; illustrated ingredients and a succinct cooking method.

What will be of all these delicious dishes? A wholesome feast and a message of community, culture and food prevails.

This fabulous book has already made its way from my kids' rooms for bedtime reading to the kitchen for cooking and back again a few times. Peanut Butter Cookies and Green Rice are favourites of ours and I can’t wait to try some of the other enticing recipes such as Coconut Dahl, Mini-Quiches and Baba Ganoush.

Beautifully illustrated details create a world of wonder behind each of the recipes and apartment occupants; like Mister Ping’s kitchen, authentically decorated with lantern light shades and a maneki-neko (Japanese Lucky Cat).

I loved talking about each recipe, its ingredients and quantities in a factual and educational way with my 5-year-old as we read it together. We’ve since researched ingredients, alternatives and had great conversations about the food and characters.

With stunning watercolour and coloured pencil artwork, and a beautifully textured cover, Lunch at 10 Pomegranate Street is perfect for both displaying and practical use. It will be used, loved and grow with my family for years to come, as it would for anyone who loves food and cooking.
