“Messing around the Edges,” Should NYS Take a Deep Dive into All Educational Structures and Policies?




Every month the seventeen members of the Board of Regents convenes in Albany, the members, elected by a joint meeting of both houses of the state legislature for five year terms, they represent the judicial districts across the state. A diverse group, by gender, race, and background; former educators, lawyers, a nurse, a doctor, parent advocates, a wide range of New Yorkers who determine policy for education and the professions.
The topics vary from month to month and I sit in the audience tweeting to the masses (@edintheapple).
This month’s meeting began with a presentation by Ira Schwartz.  Ira is one of the people who truly understand the complexities of data and the intersection of federal and state regulations, beyond that, he has the unique ability to explain, to translate federal statutes into understandable English and to negotiate with the feds.
Ira is phasing into retirement, we will all miss his “lessons;” he is the professor teaching us all.
The dominant topic this year, and probably next year are Graduation Measures, the lengthy, very lengthy, exploration of high school graduation requirements.
