Iam excited to announce that I will be joining Professor Noliwe Rooks and Professor Wayne Au for this online forum titled, “Remaking Schools in the Time of Coronavirus”, hosted by Haymarket Books, Rethinking Schools and The New Press.
Professor Rooks and Professor Au have written some of my all time favorite books about education. Rooks’ book, Cutting class: The Segrenomics of American Education is one of the most important works for understanding the persistent segregation in our school system and the racism that underpins corporate education reform and school privatization. Au’s book, Unequal By Design: High-Stakes Testing and the Standardization of Inequality fundamentally changed my relationship to education and helped me become a teacher activist.
On Wednesday, April 22 at 5pm Eastern, we are going to join together in dialogue about impact of COVID-19 on public education, disaster capitalists who are seeking to profit off of public education during this crisis, and the new opportunities that exit for social justice educators to re-imagine public education and the fight for community school models that provide wraparound services to students and families.
You can register for this online event at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/remaking-schools-in-the-time-of-coronavirus-tickets-102588025546
Here is the announcement for the event:
Three leading voices in the struggle for education justice discuss the remaking of public schools in the time of crisis.
About this Event
What has this crisis taught us about the role of public schools in society?
What have we learned about what really matters in education during this time?
When we re-open schools, what kind of education will we have, will we demand?
The Covid-19 crisis has upended public education around the country. Join three radical education activists in conversation about what this crisis means for public education now and how moving forward we can continue to fight for the schools our students deserve.
Jesse Hagopian is an award-winning educator and a leading voice on issues of educational equity and social justice unionism. He is an editor for Rethinking Schools magazine and is the co-editor of Teaching for Black Lives, and editor of More Than a Score: The New Uprising Against High-Stakes Testing.
Noliwe Rooks is the W.E.B Du Bois Professor of Literature at Cornell University and the author of Cutting School: Privatization, Segregation, and the End of Public Education which won an award for non-fiction from the Hurston/Wright Foundation.
Wayne Au is a Professor in the School of Educational Studies at the University of Washington Bothell. He is a long-time Rethinking Schools editor, co-editor of Teaching for Black Lives and author of A Marxist Education: Learning to Change the World.
