Review: Ivy Newt and the Storm Witch

Ivy Newt is the princess of the Sand Witches. It’s the start of school holidays, it’s her birthday and a big storm is descending upon all of Miracula. So big, that her friends can’t even get to her party.

To cheer up Ivy, her dad performs a magic show. But something goes very very wrong, and both of Ivy’s parents disappear, leaving Ivy and her wolf familiar, Tom, all alone in their giant castle.

Determined to find her parents, Ivy and Tom set off on an adventure that leads them across the Miracula.

They meet allies and enemies, but the further they search, the more it seems that something is amiss. Was that storm just an ordinary storm or something else? Is there someone plotting to hurt the kings and queens of Miracula?

Ivy Newt and the Storm Witch is book one in a great new JF series for kids who love fantasy, mystery and witchy powers.

It’s a lighthearted and easy read with stunning illustrations throughout, making it a great book for junior readers looking to step up from chapter books.

Ivy is a fab main character. Brave, curious and daring, she’s an inspiring adventurer who isn’t easily intimidated and has a bucketload of determination.

Magda Brol’s illustrations are delightfully detailed. She brings Ivy and the whole of Miracula to life. They truly are gorgeous.

Book one has set up a wonderful premise for a series kids are going to love. The map at the front of the book sets out a whole world of exciting places for Ivy to explore, and the world Derek Keilty has created is intriguing and engaging with shape shifting animal companions, magic carpets and lots of magic.
