Review: Molly and Maple

'...Losing her sight wasn't the worst thing for Nettie... [it] was that people started to think differently about her. Some people even seemed to think less of her...'

This powerful opening to Molly and Maple sets the tone for the challenges faced by anyone with a disability - and that's (astonishingly) over 21 per cent of Australians.

In the case of Annette (Nettie) Holden, a former journalist, government and business public affairs officer, the loss of her sight was devastating and challenging. But it was also a chance for her to transform her new life into something truly inspiring.

The story of Molly and Maple celebrates Nettie's journey - from using an international white cane to two beloved guide dogs that walk beside her, literally and figuratively, as canine guardian angels.

Along with her cane, then later Molly - her first canine angel - Nettie's resolve helped her settle into the challenges of a new life. She still had lunches and dinners out with friends and family. She served on committees and wrote papers to the government about the needs of people with disabilities. She even travelled the world!

When Molly eventually grew close to retirement, Nettie received a new pup - Maple - who took over the harness. Although Molly went to stay with friends while Maple settled in, she eventually returned to see out her retirement with Nettie and Maple. I had no idea this happened (and it may or may not have drawn a tear or two!).

Barbie Robinson tugs at the heartstrings with this waggy tale. The story follows the everyday life of Nettie and her dogs but it also highlights important (and helpful) points and issues that surround disability. There is so much many people don't know about disability care. Barbie highlights just some points - woven gently through the story. It was fascinating to learn that each Guide Dog is selected to match not only the specific needs of each person but also their personality.

Painterly illustrations by artist Sara Phemister use vibrant colour in a celebratory way that beautifully reflects triumph over adversity, and makes it clear to the reader that a life can be lived with impact and adventure and meaning - all in full colour, even when the eyes can no longer see.

This book is a priceless way to introduce children (and big children) to the lives of people whose courage and strength serve as priceless inspiration for a life well-lived. It might even change the way children think, let alone see.
