Maisie is learning how to swim safely. With her Dad by her side she practices jumping waves and knowing when it's better to dive under them.
When Maisie hesitates to dive under a bigger wave, she discovers the strength of the water as it tumbles her about and dumps her. Maisie's fortunate that Dad's there to pull her to safety.
After her scary experience, Maisie is wary of going in the water again, but she does love the beach, and Dad convinces her to be brave and try jumping the waves again.
Beach safety is such an important topic, and this book is an excellent way to introduce valuable strategies to young children and their carers. Pip Harry's text is relatable and Hilary Jean Tapper's illustrations are colourful and dynamic, presenting the beach experience in a non-threatening way.
Walking on the sand, swimming, exploring rockpools and beach combing are all part of coastal life and holidays. Great preparation for a trip to the beach, Over or Under? is perfect summer reading.
