Review: Wonders Under the Moon

Tai Snaith is an author and artist based in Melbourne. Her impressive, Wonders Under the Moon, is a collection of 216 nocturnal creatures.

Illustrated for maximum effect against a dark background, they fill the pages with their beauty and abilities between the Introduction and About the Artist.

This book is as much loved by the author as are the creatures featured inside.

There is passion and warmth in its creation, which is reflected in each word and image that can be felt.

This is a reference and educational book,

designed to initiate a protective attitude in readers toward the creatures, especially the endangered species and their habitats that play such a large role in the preservation of our planet.

The animals are grouped together for their similarity of features, behaviour and origins. There are: slimy and slippery, spikey and spiny, fantastic features, and biters and bloodsuckers, amongst others.

Boxes of facts and statistics on the amount and type of food, body weight, and individual antics are accompanied by the collective noun of the creatures’ group.

Toward the end there is an additional five pages allocated to Creature Details, grouped again, covering every entry, where they can be found, and their scientific name. There is also a list of Ways We Can Help.

I must call attention to the glorious end pages which depict four framed images on both front and back.  Front – Tropical rainforests, Old growth forests, Urban home gardens, and Caves. Back – Woodlands near streams, Tree top canopies, Shrub-lands and Savanna, and Swamps.

These compete for centre stage with the stunning covers. Simply beautiful in every way!

This is Tai’s eighth picture book, which follows Wonders Under the Sun.
