Review: Hafsa’s Way

Hafsa will not take no for an answer. She intends to be a doctor but her parents do not hold the same dream for her. Her parents don't support the idea of girls being doctors and believe she should follow a more traditional path and seek marriage.

As a companion novel to the Amal Unbound and Omar Rising, we are once more transported to a small Pakistani village, hours away from the big city of Lahore. 

Hafsa Imtiaz discovers a flyer advertising the Bukhara Summer Science Camp, in Lahore, that teaches kids about medicine. She applies without her parents’ permission and is excited to be accepted. Her parents believe the camp is expensive and will not let her go to Lahore unsupervised. Hafsa persuades her father to let her go after her sister, Shabnam and her husband, Sohail, who live near the camp, offer to pay for the camp and let her stay with them.

Unfortunately the camp is not as she thought and she discovers she has mistakenly enrolled into an alternative class studying climate change. Nevertheless, she immerses herself into the classes and despite being made to feel like an outsider, since she does not live in the dorms, Hafsa becomes passionate about her studies. A visit to a zoo observing the treatment of its animals, becomes the catalyst for Hafsa to realise, just like in her own personal life, if you want change, you cannot ‘disrupt the status quo if we simply give up’.

In a story of resilience and following your dreams, Hafsa comes to realise that sometimes things are not always what they seem and many situations are not black and white. Her sister Shabnam seems to have forsaken her own goals in order to please her husband’s family. Hafsa gradually begins to understand that finding balance as well as resolutions is the way forward when seeking change.

Hafsa’s Way is a beautifully written story touching on many issues but, nevertheless, finds a pleasing conclusion of hope and resilience. The eye-catching cover art by Shehzil Malik sums up beautifully the many issues Hafsa juggles throughout the story, as she struggles to be the agent of change in her family and community. Through her bravery and determination, Hafsa’s story can inspire others to stand up for what they believe and pursue their dreams even if the odds are stacked against you.
