Review: Australian Geographic - World's Most Freaky
Sorted by world regions and with plenty of ‘freaky’ animal facts clearly sectioned with a photo and a small amount of text, this book allows readers to either dip in and out or devour the details from cover to cover.
The facts within are not intended to horrify, repulse or make you cringe – as the title word ‘freaky’ may imply – but rather to intrigue, fascinate and elicit the ‘wow – no way!’ factor. The whole point is to open your eyes to the uniqueness and tenacity of nature, with a side dose of awareness, so we can all step towards conserving these beautiful creatures for generations to come.
When you dip into World’s Most Freaky, you’ll no doubt find your own favourite facts, but a few that stayed with me were:
• the webbed feet and hands of the Proboscis Monkey that enable it to execute a fast-swimming escape from crocodiles
• not all frogs start their lives as tadpoles – the Paedophryne Amauensis hatches as a mini adult
• the wings of a Glasswinged Butterfly are (as you might guess by the name) all but transparent … and it can fly at speeds of up to 13 km an hour!
There is much to fascinate in World’s Most Freaky – the stunning photos that Australian Geographic is known for, the easy-to-read layout and the little ‘fact boxes’ with additional ‘did-you-know’ information.
However, what I would have liked is more information about where each of the animals can be found. Knowing they are native to ‘Asia’, ‘Oceania’ or ‘North America’, for example, is one thing, but I really wanted to know specific countries. Even a little map for each animal would have helped.
That oversight aside, World’s Most Freaky would sit well on the bookshelves of any child (or adult) who loves a good animal fact.
Of note, too, is that there are at least two other books in the ‘World’s Most’ series – World’s Most Extreme and World’s Most Deadly – along with an Australia-focused series, including Australia’s Most Deadly and Australia’s Most Freaky. Plus … if you are particularly fascinated by spiders, sharks or snakes, you may want to dip into the Australian Geographic and Hardie Grant 'Australia’s Most Dangerous ...' series by Kathy Riley.
As a teacher, while I would have loved the bonus of some teaching notes from the Hardie Grant website, this is exactly the type of book I’d have included in my class library and used to keep students engaged during those tricky ‘5 minutes before the bell’ times.
