Review: Danny Go’s Volcano Adventure
Is your young reader ready for a challenge? This interactive picture book will take them into a world of volcanoes, hot lava and avoiding danger at every turn.Danny Go! is a popular YouTube show that is designed to entertain and activate kindergarten children with songs, stories and movement. One of his most popular videos is The Floor is Lava. This now takes the lava to another level.
Danny Go’s Volcano Adventure is an interactive story that encourages the child to help Danny navigate, in his rowing boat, a path to discover magical ice gems hidden deep inside an active volcano.
As an adult reads the story, children are encouraged to trace paths, tap gems and even tilt the book to help guide Danny along the best pathway to collect the magical gems, whilst avoiding hot lava flows.
Throughout the story Danny speaks directly to the reader, alerting them to dangers as well as asking questions and giving them suggestions how best to avoid lava and a very large volcanic creature! Using two different font colours for Danny’s dialogue - one as he describes the scene and the other to offer suggestions - the suspense builds at every turn.
The illustrations are big, bold and colourful, just dripping with hot lava! Nevertheless, there is a simplicity within that helps the reader identify the key elements in the story, giving them a feeling of success with the challenges they are given.
The book is designed to be read most likely as a one-on-one experience allowing the adult and child to work together to follow the story and the interactive prompts. It could also be read in a group situation, by adding instructions for the audience with a few alternative actions for those key moments in the book, when required to actually touch the book.
