Review: Green Cities: How Green Infrastructure Helps Heal the Planet
Green Cities: How Green Infrastructure Helps Heal the Planet, a book by Sheila Boudreau and Katy Dockrill, is an introductory exploration of nature in the urban environment, emphasising the importance of green spaces and green infrastructure.
It’s got a modern, yet retro feel, and is filled with bright illustrations, colourful text boxes, and lots of green to match the theme. The design uses plenty of subheadings and every turn of a page offers visual elements.
It starts by looking at the history of cities and how city planning can be transformed and improved by working with biodiversity and even creating a walkable city. It also considers the impact of climate change and the way building cities can contribute greenhouse gases, heat islands, and the risk of water pollution.
The rest of the book is a positive guide to making a difference. The first step is putting nature first, understanding connection to nature and learning from Indigenous Knowledge, protecting groundwater, maintaining soil health, and using urban agriculture spaces, and designing sponge cities (which soak in and hold rainwater). Plant selection and placement, and supporting urban wildlife (e.g. wildlife crossings) are also important.
Lots of examples of green infrastructure are shared. Everything from rain gardens, urban forests and street trees to storm water ponds, green roofs and walls, and permeable footpaths.
There are also ‘Imagine if’ scenarios, like imagine if a school became a wetland, a shipyard became a re-wilded neighbourhood, or the roof of a building became a farm. There are more than these three, and all are based on actual examples from around the world.
It takes many people to make a green city successful, including city planners, landscape architects, arborists, ecologists, and lots more.
A section called How Can You Help Now? Gives readers some ways they can make a difference themselves. They include being a citizen scientist, participating in biodiversity programs, and volunteering at urban farms and green community initiatives.
I highly recommend Green Cities for families and students in upper primary and high school. Use it as inspiration for creating your own green spaces, and championing green cities.
