It’s the story of a young girl, the narrator, who loves creating art. It’s her favourite thing in the world.
She becomes disillusioned and a bit jealous though, when she thinks someone else is better and their artwork draws more attention.
The someone else is a bird named Vera, who belongs to the girl’s grandfather, and they discover Vera’s artistic talent quite by surprise.
What begins with a picture of a pink flamingo, soon becomes a trail of artistic endeavours including an abstract painting, a sculpture and collage. The girl decides there is no point in trying to be an artist herself, when someone else is more talented, but there’s another surprise in store.Grandad and Vera the artistic bird finds a way to show the girl that everyone can be an artist and all kinds of art are skill levels are valued. She’s reminded what really matters.
Then the girl and Vera find a way to work together. That makes their artistic endeavours even more enjoyable.
