Review: Making Picture Books

Have you ever thought about writing a picture book? Perhaps Illustrating one? Or maybe both?

Making Picture Books by award winning children’s author Libby Gleeson can walk you step-by-step through the entire process from idea to publication, and beyond.

Part 1 is for writers. Libby shares her experience in working from an initial idea, through the writing and revising stages, all the way to submission and publication.

There is loads of useful information including sections on plot, characterisation, language and tense.

Libby helpfully includes examples of early drafts, followed by the final drafts, so the reader can see the changes that have occurred via the editing process.

Part 2 is for illustrators. Although Libby is not an illustrator, she has worked with many on her 20+ picture books. She describes the process from manuscript acceptance, idea and character development, right through to book design and publication.

Ideas and advice from well-known children’s book authors and illustrators including Ursula Dubosarsky, Andrew Joyner, Margaret Wild and Claire Saxby can also be found throughout Making Picture Books.

Although this book is less than 100 pages, it is absolutely brimming with helpful information for writers and illustrators at all stages of their creative journey. And, it is the perfect size to slip into your bag when heading out to write in your favourite café or library.

It could also be used in the classroom for units of work about picture books.

Making Picture Books would be a worthwhile addition to the bookshelves of anyone who writes or illustrates for children.
