12 year old Zoey suffers severe anxiety, brought on by the sudden death of her father, and has a fear of many things including germs, accidents and falling ill. As a result Zoey is homeschooled and limits her travel beyond her home to very few places.

Zoey has been supported by her mum, best friend Lena and next door book shop owner Jada, who have shown understanding and patience when the fear bubbles up inside her.

Zoey and her dad shared a passion for a fantasy series called Magic of Ever After by the author Raven M Wells. Together they would read the books and her father would often say ‘Everything’s going to be okay. Find the magic Zo’.

When a chance arises to meet her favourite author and have her book signed, Zoey is determined to attend the event and hopefully this will be a positive step towards finding some magic in her life. Missing out on a signature she is instead given as a consolation a blue pencil with the inscription ‘Make your own magic’. Was this somehow a message from her favourite author?

Once Zoey begins to use the pencil she discovers her stories are coming to reality. Maybe stories can come true and just maybe she can find the magic to make her fearless like the heroine Kat in her fantasy novels. But can the power of the pencil make you a hero in your own story?

The story explores Zoey’s interactions with two key friends and learning how navigate these friendships is a big challenge for her. Lena, her best friend, would love to have Zoey join her in middle school which would mean travelling beyond her safe zone. When Zoey struggles to overcome her anxiety she can see her friend begin to form other friendships, leaving her feeling even more lost. Her new friend Derek, who she met at the signings, suffers from anxiety too, understands how difficult life can be with anxiety but can still see who Zoey is, or wants to be, beyond the fears that surround her.

Stewart begins each chapter with a key moment from the fictitious fantasy novel by Raven M Wells that was so loved by Zoey and her father. These snippets add depth to the events in the chapter and build the desire and belief Zoey has to try and be the heroine in her own story. As Zoey attempts to find the magic her dad believed in, the reader is challenged to wonder are we the writers of our own story and what does happily ever after really mean?

The book is ideal for upper middle grade readers, exploring the challenges experienced by those who suffer from anxiety and other mental health issues. Other issues arise throughout the story, death and divorce, seen through the lens of teenagers and dealt with sensitively. Although the story has a fantasy element embedded within it, at its core the story is about developing self awareness and self acceptance, as well as celebrating individuality and sensitivity to others.
