Review: Kev and Trev - Snot Cool Snow Stories!
We discover pugons are very shy, cute, small animals that are supposedly living up high on the snowy mountaintop and are a cross between a dragon and a pug. With only a very old book as a reference guide and a deadline from their ‘puglisher’, Kev and Trev are eager to find a way to make the pugons their characters for their next book.
As well as finding the pugons, their ultimate goal has not changed - one day they will be mega rich from writing stories based on their adventures and will finally be able to afford a new houseboat. Will they be third time lucky? Or will it be Mission Impossible!
Tracking down these unusual animals inevitably means Kev, the cockatoo and Trev, the marine iguana get to meet other animals, both friendly and not so friendly, giving them great ideas for mini stories they create throughout their journey. These stories are fun, rhyming and often not entirely accurate but provide a giggle to the reader.
The fabulous balance between the animated illustrations and simple text to support the story is why the Kev and Trev series is such a fabulous addition to any emerging reader’s library collection. The text is well spaced and the inclusion of dyslexic font in the short stories makes Kylie’s books highly accessible and enjoyable for all readers.
The relationship between Kev and Trev is a celebration in itself. Neurodivergent children will easily identify and hopefully see themselves in Trev especially, as it is evident that although he may struggle with the written word, he has wonderful abilities in other areas. Trev is highly creative with his illustrations, as well as being quite savvy in his survival skills. In fact, the funniest moments and fabulous play on words often come from some of Trev’s mistakes.
Readers are, once again, going to laugh out loud at the clever puns and ‘roll your eyes’ jokes that Kylie has delivered so well. The story moves at a face pace with wonderful graphics that support the text and are so visually appealing. Each character brings joy to the story, leaving the reader with a sense of warmth in what was a cold setting but nevertheless chill-arious adventure.
