Review: Our Flowers
Many words have been used to describe Bancroft’s illustrations – bold, vibrant, bright, eye-catching – but for me, the appeal of her style is the way they jump off the page, grab hold of you and make you keep looking.
Our Flowers is part of a 4-book series for our youngest readers, introducing them to Australian native flora and fauna and celebrating the beauty of the many unique species we have here.
With straightforward rhyming couplets, each page of Our Flowers focuses on one Australian flower, from the more well-known – waratah, banksia – to the lesser-known Geraldton Wax and Pink Rock Orchids.
Combined with the captivating artwork, the text provides interesting and varied facts to introduce the flower and encourage the reader’s desire to know more.
There is a clear focus on Country and how the selected flowers contribute to ways of life, including making string from the leaves of the Blue Flax Lily, or tea from the fresh or dried flowers of the Everlasting Paper Daisy.
