Review: Otis Ottley and the School in the Sky

Otis Ottley and the School in the Sky by Will Kostakis is an engaging and enjoyable read that combines magic with some surprisingly meaningful themes.

Otis lives in the shadow of the Manor School for Magic, a mysterious school floating above his town. Like many children, he dreams of visiting it, but Otis has a very personal reason for wanting to get inside. Determined to find a way in, he is willing to bend a few rules along the way.

The story has a simple storyline that quickly draws readers in. It is easy to follow without feeling dull, making it a good choice for readers who are just beginning to explore chapter books or who prefer a shorter, more accessible read. There is enough magic, mystery and possibility to keep the story moving, while Otis himself is an appealing character to follow.

For readers who enjoy magic and spells, there is plenty to spark the imagination, without the story becoming complicated or overwhelming. The idea of a magical school hovering above an ordinary town is particularly fun, giving the everyday world a small glimpse of something extraordinary.

Beneath the humour and magic, Kostakis also explores more emotional ideas. Otis's journey touches on the loss of a parent and the difficult process of moving forward while trying not to lose the memories of someone who is no longer there. These themes are handled gently, allowing the story to remain warm and hopeful rather than becoming too heavy.

Overall, Otis Ottley and the School in the Sky is a charming middle-grade novel that offers an entertaining magical adventure while quietly exploring grief, memory and letting go. It would be a great choice for younger readers looking for a quick, enjoyable story with a little more beneath the surface.
