Review: To All The Boys I've Loved Before: Graphic Novel
If you’re looking for a quick, sweet read with all the charm of a teen rom-com, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before in graphic novel form is a fun place to start.
Based on Jenny Han’s hugely popular novel, this adaptation follows Lara Jean, whose secret love letters — carefully written for every boy she has ever loved but never intended to send — suddenly make their way into the real world. Cue misunderstandings, unexpected relationships and plenty of romantic complications.
The transition from novel to graphic novel works particularly well here. The story moves quickly, making it an easy and enjoyable read, while the full-colour illustrations add another layer to Lara Jean’s world. Akimaro’s artwork brings plenty of personality to the characters and settings, with small visual details helping to tell the story alongside the dialogue and narration.
The character designs by Li Lu also give the adaptation an appealing anime-inspired aesthetic, which adds to its youthful, playful feel without losing the sweetness that made the original novel so popular.
For readers who already know and love Lara Jean, this is a charming way to revisit her story. For those who have heard all about To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before but haven’t quite got around to reading the original novel, the graphic novel offers a much quicker way to experience the story.
Sweet, quirky and full of romantic mishaps, this is a particularly good choice for readers looking for an accessible graphic novel with plenty of heart — and perhaps for those who want to find out what all the Lara Jean hype is about without committing to the full novel.
