Review: We Did It Anyway

What starts as a week of camping, beaches and hanging out with friends takes a very unexpected turn in We Did It Anyway when Alex, Otto and Jasper discover a fortune in gold bars. Unfortunately, they’re not the only ones interested in the treasure.

Carla Salmon’s follow-up to We Saw What You Started brings back many of the elements that made the first book such an enjoyable read: short, fast-paced chapters, plenty of friendship, a touch of romance and just enough danger to keep the pages turning. When the boys find themselves on the run from armed smugglers, their holiday takes a decidedly more dangerous direction. Meanwhile, Luna and Milly are left wondering what has happened when the boys fail to show up at their designated rendezvous.
The story unfolds over just 24 hours and is told through the perspectives of several characters, creating a strong sense of momentum as the pieces of the mystery gradually come together. Short chapters and well-placed hooks keep the action moving, while the shifting perspectives add tension as different characters discover new information.

The Australian setting is another strength. Camping trips, beach holidays, friendships and the beginnings of romance provide a familiar backdrop for teenage readers, while the history woven into the island setting adds an intriguing extra layer to the mystery. There is plenty of action and suspense, but it never feels forced or overdone. Instead, the tension builds naturally as the characters try to work out what is happening and how to get themselves out of trouble.

While We Did It Anyway is very much an adventure story, it’s the characters and their relationships that keep it grounded. There’s enough danger and excitement to keep the pages turning, without losing the warmth and humour that made the first book so appealing.

Fast-paced, suspenseful and distinctly Australian, We Did It Anyway is a thoroughly entertaining read for teens, particularly those looking for an accessible adventure with mystery, friendship and plenty of action.
