This stunning picture book from Sandra Dieckmann is a visual feast that is a joy to lose yourself in. The lyrical language tells of the arrival of a new creature in the wild wood. He has come from across the sea and is strange and different. The other creatures observe from a distance and live in fear.The imagery is spectacular. The first few pages evoke a mythical, mysterious feel. A lonely white polar bear is depicted against an effusive landscape of dark blues and greys. The scattered orange and brown hues of the other woodland creatures stand out as they silently watch.
The new arrival collects leaves. Leaves of varying sizes, shapes and colours. He runs through the wood covered in his beautiful leaves, only to dive into the tumultuous blue ocean.
The woodland creatures discuss the new arrival. Their fear is getting the better of them. The new creature is big and has sharp teeth. He must be dangerous. Yet they sense his sadness. His loneliness. Should they help him? What can they do?
This is a story of difference and fear of the unknown. Collectively, the creatures can’t agree on whether to help the new arrival. It will take the courage of one to lead the others to action.
The story is touching and the illustrations are captivating. This is a beautiful book and you should take the time to pore over the detailed complexity of the images so you can fully appreciate it.
