Bears are meant to be scary, aren't they? Well, that's what everyone thinks and so Bear roams the forest, day and night, roaring and growling at the other animals.

But, the truth is, Bear would actually rather stay at home and knit or study the stars. And, he'd actually quite like a friend.

So Bear, who is Not So Scary, comes up with a disguise that allows him to make friends with the creatures of the forest. It's only when his plan starts to unravel, literally, that Not So Scary Bear decides to show his true colours.

This debut picture book from talented author and illustrator Ruth Waters is an incredibly delightful and humorous look at stereotypes, friendship and the beauty of being yourself. 

The sweetness and simplicity of the prose holds a subtle message that is enhanced by Ruth's acrylic and collage illustrations, each one alive with warmth and charm.

It's a perfect book to share with preschoolers and little ones starting school about the need to be true to yourself and not judge others too quickly. They're sure to fall in love with Not So Scary Bear and Not So Quiet Mouse, and maybe even knitting.
