It’s finally strawberry season! Whether you pick them yourself or just pick them up from the grocery store, these sweet ripe berries are in their prime and available everywhere. Today I’m showing you a great and easy way to use up fresh strawberries in this bright and juicy homemade strawberry sauce!

How to Make Strawberry Sauce?

  1. Combine strawberries, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
  2. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the strawberries release their juices and the mixture is liquidy (about 5 minutes or so).
  3. Bring to a boil and cook at a boil for one minute.
  4. Reduce heat and continue to cook until mixture is thickened, but keep in mind that your strawberry sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  5. Serve! Strawberry sauce is always best served warm (at least in my opinion!)

What To Eat With Strawberry Sauce?

Strawberry sauce is good on just about anything, even (especially?) eating straight from the jar. Some of my favorite sauce companions include serving it warm over pound cake or angel food cake, pouring over over buttermilk pancakes or French Toast, or just even enjoying by the spoonful!

Tips for Making Strawberry Sauce

Strawberry sauce is incredibly easy, but I do have a few tips that will hopefully make the process even simpler for you!

  • The cornstarch is optional. I love it because it speeds up the process of thickening the sauce and yields a lush, glossy sauce in a matter of minutes. If you leave out the cornstarch, you won’t get the same thick sauce and it will take a lot longer to thicken the everything properly (think closer to 20 minutes rather than 5).
  • This sauce will continue to thicken once it’s finished cooking as it cools. Keep this in mind while judging whether your sauce is finished or not; when you take it off the stovetop it should be a bit thinner than you want the finished product to be.
  • Accidentally cook your sauce too long and make it too thick? No fear, you’re not stuck with strawberry jam! Simply add a Tablespoon or two more water with the heat on low and cook until the water is nicely combined and the sauce is smooth.

Homemade Strawberry Sauce

A great easy recipe for homemade strawberry sauce!

  • 1 lb strawberries (tops removed and quartered)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons cornstarch¹
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract² (optional)
  1. Combine strawberries, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and lemon juice in a medium-sized saucepan.
  2. Cook over medium/low heat until berries release their juices (about 5 minutes or so, mixture should be very liquidy).
  3. Bring mixture to a boil and boil for one minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes (keep in mind sauce will continue to thicken after cooling).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, if using.

¹You can omit the cornstarch for a looser, less thick strawberry sauce. Keep in mind the sauce will need to cook much longer to reach a consistency that isn’t too runny (about 15 minutes or longer).
²Optional. You can leave it out for a stronger, fresh strawberry taste, but I love the flavor the vanilla extract adds!
