Review: The Embarrassing Confessions of Gracie Sparks

Starting high school is nerve-wracking enough for most kids. Different teachers. New subjects. A maze of corridors and classrooms to navigate. More homework. That’s all bad enough but when your dad insists on sending you to a school where you don’t know anyone except your aloof big sister and one weirdo from your primary school … well, that’s next level.

Enter Gracie Sparks.

The transition from being the popular and cool student who wows everyone with her electric guitar skills to being a friendless nobody does not sit well with Gracie and she’s determined to do something about it. But what?

All the other Year 7s at Middleton Grammar are already in tight friendship groups so Gracie is initially stuck with boring-girl Margot. 

Breaking into established friendship groups is not as easy as Gracie expected. 

Her attempts to impress the others with her electric guitar skills do not quite go to plan. Her sister, Imogen, is no help at all. And Margot is not only a bit of a hindrance but also not quite who she seems to be on the surface.

Is Gracie going to be stuck hiding in the library forever? And the other friendless library-dweller, Amiel – what’s his deal?

Told through a series of diary entries, Gracie’s quest to be accepted by her peers – and seen as more than a little girl by her family – is immediately relatable. The diary-entry style makes for easy reading and allows author Fiona Harris to delve right into the inner thoughts and observations of a twelve-year-old.

While Gracie certainly possesses a very generous helping of the stereotypical snarky attitude associated with many pre-adolescents, and seems very down on herself at times, this is lightened with pockets of humour and I’ve-been-there-too reality, allowing the reader to cheer her on (even if we find ourselves rolling our eyes at times).

Fiona Harris has created a varied cast of characters and incorporated many oh-so-familiar scenes, ensuring every reader will see themselves within the pages and find someone or something to connect with in this down-to-earth but ultimately heartwarming story.

On a personal note, The Embarrassing Confessions of Gracie Sparks definitely hit home in places where I thought ‘yep, that was me’ and, having taught Year 5 and 6 for many years in a ‘past life’, this is a book I would have used in my classroom to explore self-confidence and identity.
