Author and illustrator, James Foley, really is the master of the ‘what if?’ and he doesn’t disappoint in his latest picture book offering, Oh No!
It’s not only the elephant that’s involved in this hilarious tale, though; there’s also a pig, and a piranha or two.
And a wedding!
But ... where did the chaos start?
Was it the elephant’s fault?
Or the pig’s?
Or was it the piranhas who caused the mayhem?
It’s not until you get to the end of the story that you start to question where it actually began. Savvy and observant kids will notice little clues well before adults, I’m sure, but either way, this is a clever technique that encourages multiple re-reads and close engagement with the illustrations.
The question, ‘What’s that noise?’ is repeated throughout the story, keeping readers engaged with the action throughout and encouraging discussion as they predict what might happen next and what could be making the ‘burps’, ‘chomps’ and all the other sounds.
Teachers in particular will enjoy the use and presentation of the onomatopoeic words – ‘crash’ represented as elephant legs, ‘splish splash’ as water, ‘splat’ as splattered cake – and the opportunities these provide for word exploration activities.
A cumulative tale that is also a clever circular narrative, Oh No! is full of alliteration and onomatopoeia. Coupled with James Foley’s bright and expressive illustrations, what more could you want from this intriguing take on a ‘whodunnit?’
