Review: The Frumpling

What can I say. From the gorgeous front cover I was instantly intrigued and wanted to know who or what was a Frumpling. Then I read the opening page and instantly fell in love with this sad lonely creature. A creature that is avoided by everyone that passes by. Everyone but one, that is.

What follows is a tale of atonement, friendship and togetherness.

Using made up words and fun character names, Jo van der Borgh has written a charming tale that is reminiscent of rhyming books of the past. Along with the Frumpling we have the Poppletort and the Croots amongst other fun creatures who all live at Ponton Poole.  Kids love to say funny words and this is sure to be a hit.

There were one or two rhyming glitches that tripped me up along the way, but these may be down to accent differences as Jo is from London and we do have a slightly more relaxed accent down under.

Some say illustrations are the star in picture books and The Frumpling is no exception. Jo Beasley has created a cast of quirky loveable characters who shine from the first page to the last. Her interpretation of the Frumpling is perfect. Its instantly obvious that he is sad and lonely without reading a word and you can almost smell the aroma lifting from the page.

Her bright colour pallet gives the story an uplifting positive feel. Right from the start we are championing the Frumpling instead of feeling pity.

I must also note Jo Beasley’s book dedication,’ To my husband, whose gorgeous tatty work shirt greatly inspired my illustrations’. I think we can all relate to that.

The Frumpling is a heart warming story full of laughter and friendship. It’s the perfect bed time read and I’m sure parents will soon be reading it over and over.
