Review: The Mushroom and the Flower

In a quiet forest, a mushroom with the brightest pink cap is the centre of attention. Animals gather near her for protection from the rain, shade from the sun or just as an ideal resting place. There is no doubt this stunning plant is ‘a masterpiece of nature’ and enjoys immensely her radiant features.

When a small flower slowly begins to emerge one summer’s day, raising the interests of the creatures of the forest, the mushroom is not pleased that she is no longer the centre of their attention and admiration.

Mushroom, who is an extremely chatty character, lets flower know how displeased she is that she has to share her sunny spot with him. The flower remains silent. As the flower grows and begins to shade the mushroom and the creatures rejoice in his beauty, the mushroom reluctantly begins to accept the flower’s presence and also the fact that he has attracted the butterflies, who have never visited her.

The story up until this stage is voiced in first person from the mushroom’s perspective but there is a subtle change. We now get to understand, from a third person perspective, how the flower has felt since being carried to this place, not wanting to cause distress. His voice is ‘too soft’ for the mushroom to hear and understand. The story ends once again with mushroom’s voice that reflects the new understanding and acceptance she has gained without a word needed to be spoken from the flower.

Having loved Tiny Wonders and The Colours of Home, I was once again transported into Sally’s whimsical world of nature and the beauty and language of flowers. Sally is able to create dream-like settings that are uniquely explored from interesting perspectives. 

Her use of colour in The Mushroom and the Flower captures your attention both on the cover and the endpapers. The change in the colour palette, when there is a change from first person to third person, subtly emphasises the variance in characters - mushroom is chatty and bright (radiant pink) whilst flower is strong but silent (muted deep blue).

This story has strong themes of acceptance, empathy, friendship and tolerance that young children can easily understand and explore within their own circle of friends. Children will no doubt delight in studying Sally’s simple but expressive pictures, their diverse range of colours and snapshots of moments in the story. 

Sally explored in The Colours of Home moving from one country to another and the challenges one faces in finding comfort in familiar things in your new location. The Mushroom and the Flower would make an excellent companion book as it can be used to explore migrants and/or refugees as they face new challenges settling into their new home and how we can assist the process. Older children can examine all the characters, big and small and identify similarities we observe that can occur when it comes to acceptance and benefits gained within our multicultural world. 

A timely and thoughtful book for classroom discussions.
